Wool is a wonderful natural material—soft, warm, and durable. Proper care is crucial to ensuring your favorite hand-knitted items stay beautiful for a long time. Here's how to wash, dry, and store wool properly without it becoming felted or stretched out.
1. The right laundry: hand wash or machine wash?
As a general rule, hand washing is the most gentle method , especially for delicate yarns like merino or alpaca. Use lukewarm water (max. 30°C) and a mild wool detergent. Soak the knitted item only briefly and avoid vigorous rubbing or wringing to prevent felting.
Machine wash: Some wool yarns are suitable for machine washing. Select the wool wash cycle with a low temperature (max. 30°C) and low spin speed. Use a special wool detergent and place delicate knitwear in a laundry net.
2. Dry properly – no stretching or shrinking
After washing, never wring out wool. Gently squeeze out the water and place the knitted item in a towel to absorb any remaining moisture. Then let it dry flat on a towel , preferably in a well-ventilated area. Avoid direct sunlight and radiators , as the heat can stress the fibers and cause the material to shrink.
3. Store wool properly
To keep your woolen garments looking their best for a long time, store them lying down in a breathable bag or box . Avoid ironing, as this can alter the shape of the knitted garment. Lavender sachets or cedarwood help protect against moths.
4. Extra tips for long shelf life
-
Avoid pilling: Small pills can be removed with a wool shaver or special wool comb.
-
Freshness without washing: Air out woolen clothing after wearing – wool is self-cleaning and hardly absorbs odors.
-
Treating stains: Dab stains with a damp cloth without rubbing too hard.
With proper care, your knitwear will stay soft, shape-retaining, and beautiful for years to come. Now it's time to take care of your favorite pieces and enjoy them for a long time!
