I want to learn to knit – my first steps

You're finally ready to learn to knit? Wonderful!
Knitting is more than just handicrafts – it's relaxation, creativity, and the good feeling of creating something beautiful with your own hands.

To help you get started, we'll show you what you really need at the beginning, how to cast on your first stitches – and which yarn will make it especially easy for you to get started.

1. The right yarn to start with

Start with a medium-weight yarn that is easy to work with and makes the stitches clearly visible. Our tip: ggh SAMSON – an extra-fine merino wool, soft, even, and retains its shape.
It forgives small beginner mistakes and fits wonderfully in the hand – perfect for getting a good feel for the needles.

Material: 100% virgin wool (Merino extrafine superwash)
Yarn length: 85 m / 50 g | Needle size: 4–5

2. Choose the appropriate knitting needles

For beginners, smooth wooden needles are ideal, e.g. made of birch or bamboo (for example in the shop www.handarbeiten.de ).
They are lightweight, warm to the touch, and prevent the stitches from slipping off too quickly.
Needle size 4-5 is a perfect match for ggh SAMSON .

3. The basic techniques: Casting on, knitting knit & purl stitches

With these three steps you can knit almost anything!
Watch simple tutorials or practice with short exercises.
After a few rows you'll get the hang of it – and the feeling when it suddenly "flows" is priceless!

4. Choose a simple first knitting project

A scarf, headband or potholder is ideal for practicing.
These projects allow you to knit stitches evenly, count rows, and develop a feel for yarn tension – without much pressure.

Tip: The softer and smoother the yarn, the more beautiful the stitch pattern will be – this is where the strength of ggh SAMSON really shines!

5. Stay tuned – and have fun!

Nobody knits perfectly on their first try. Every little mistake is a step towards routine. And with each project, your skills grow – and so does your enjoyment.
